Believe it or not, this took place in Atlanta, Georgia:

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A Pakistani man accused of killing his daughter because she wanted out of an arranged marriage told a judge Tuesday that he had done nothing wrong.

Quote:
Georgia Honor Killing Update: "Dad charged with murder in bride's 'honor killing,'" from CNN, July 8 (thanks to all who sent this in):

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A Pakistani man is charged with killing his 25-year-old daughter in Georgia because she wanted out of an arranged marriage, police said.

Somber and tearful, Chaudhry Rashid, 54, of Jonesboro, an Atlanta suburb, made his first court appearance Tuesday in connection with the death of Sandeela Kanwal.

He was advised through an interpreter of the murder charge, and of his legal rights.

He was arrested early Sunday, after his wife called police at about 2 a.m. She reported that she had been awakened by screaming but couldn't understand the language, a Clayton County police report said. She said she was afraid and left the house to call police.

Officers found Kanwal dead in an upstairs bedroom of the home, according to the police report.

Rashid's wife told authorities Kanwal recently had been married in Pakistan -- an arranged marriage, she said. The young woman's husband was living in Chicago, Illinois, police said, but Kanwal remained at her father's home and worked at a metro Atlanta Wal-Mart for a brief time.

"The victim was not interested in marrying, nor remaining married to her husband," the police report said, citing information authorities received from Rashid's wife. "This was causing a great deal of friction between the victim and her father," so much so that the two had not spoken in two months, the report said.

Police found Rashid sitting behind a vehicle in the driveway, and he seemed "distraught and possibly mournful," the report said. He told police, "My daughter is dead." But when asked how she died, Rashid did not answer -- "he just dropped his head."...

CNN then bravely considers the possibility of whether this is a...you know...a "South Asian" thing:

"My immediate reaction was that this is an anomaly in the South Asian community," Ajay Nair, associate dean of multicultural affairs at Columbia University, told CNN on Tuesday. "Most South Asian-American families enjoy wonderful relationships within their families."

"I think there's ways that we can rationalize it and make sense of it, particularly in thinking about new immigrant communities in the U.S. and thinking about some of the struggles that they face and the generation gap and the cultural differences that children do face," he said. "I think there are some issues there, but by and large, this isn't a rampant problem within South Asian communities. What is a problem, I think, is domestic violence, and that cuts across all communities."

Domestic violence does indeed cut across all communities. But honor killings are not a "South Asian" problem -- they're an Islamic problem, and CNN's courage somehow falters when it comes to even considering that. Yet nowhere except in Islamic communities is it seen as something that has religious justification. Jordan's Parliament has rejected on Islamic grounds attempts to stiffen sentences for honor killings.

Nair said he believes a "significant human rights campaign" is needed to address such killings....

You can say that again, Nair.

The caption on the photo below reads: "Chaudhry Rashid is accused of killing his daughter because she wanted to end an arranged marriage."

Shalom All,

I sometimes wonder why these people just do not move out. What holds them back if the situation is so hopeless? Why stay next to a volcano that is about to erupt when there are safer places to be? If they can afford to pay such ransoms, sell out and then move. I'm planning to do exactly that before it even comes close to that volatile situation even though this is a very nice country to live in now.

This is a follow-up to one of Rob's earlier posts about 'Sharia' Law in the UK:

Quote:
Spencer: The Stealth Jihad in Britain

Three years after the July 7, 2005, jihad terror attacks in London, the jihad in Britain is stronger than ever. It is not proceeding by means of more terrorism, but by stealth and by the preemptive surrender of all too many British officials.

The stealth jihad is a deeply-rooted, well-funded and wide-ranging effort to impose Islamic law, Sharia, upon the non-Muslim populations of Western countries. In England, and in America, it sometimes takes the form of an effort to win acceptance for Sharia law by portraying it as a matter of “civil rights” and multicultural “diversity.”

This effort got a tremendous shot in the arm in Britain last Thursday, when the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, said in an address at the London Muslim Centre that “it is possible in this country for those who are entering into a contractual agreement to agree that the agreement shall be governed by law other than English law.” Including Islamic law? Yes: “There is no reason why principles of sharia, or any other religious code, should not be the basis for mediation or other forms of alternative dispute resolution.”

Pirates release German cargo ship, company says

(CNN) -- Pirates have released a German cargo ship and its crew of 14 after holding them for nearly six weeks, the vessel's owner said Wednesday.

The "pirates have left the ship," Holger Lehmann of the shipping company Lehmann GmbH told CNN.

He said the pirates seized the MV Lehmann Timber and its crew -- comprised of a Russian captain, an Estonian, four Ukrainians and eight Burmese -- on May 28 in the Gulf of Aden.

The crew are all "well," Lehmann said. "We are very pleased that the crew came through this ordeal."

He would not comment on whether a ransom was paid, and it was not immediately clear when the ship and crew were released.

The Gulf of Aden, which connects the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea, has become a treacherous stretch for ships, particularly along the Somali coast.

On April 4, suspected Somali pirates seized a French luxury yacht and held its crew of 30 for a week until getting a $2 million ransom. Later that month, pirates released a Spanish fishing boat after being paid a reported $1.2 million ransom.

The International Maritime Bureau, which monitors shipping crime, said in April that 49 pirate attacks on ships were reported in the first three months of 2008, compared with 41 for the same period last year. It recorded 263 pirates attacks last year, up from 239 the year before.

Abbas congratulates Kuntar's family for killer's release
By News Agencies

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday congratulated the family of notorious Lebanese terrorist Samir Kuntar , who was freed on Wednesday with four Hezbollah guerillas as part of a prisoner exchange with Israel.

Abbas welcomed the swap between Israel and the Lebanon-based militant group, and in a statement congratulated the families of the "liberated prisoners," issued during a visit to Malta.

Kuntar has been imprisoned in Israel since 1979. He was convicted of one of the grisliest attacks in Israeli history - killing three people including, a man in front of his 4-year-old daughter, and then killing the girl herself by crushing her skull.

In Gaza, meanwhile, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on Wednesday hailed Kuntar as "a great hero" and said Israel's decision to release him and four Hezbollah fighters had undermined Israel's policy of not freeing "prisoners with blood on their hands."

Haniyeh also branded the exchange of prisoners as "a victory" for Hezbollah and armed resistance against Israel.

"The Israelis should pay the price for the release of Gilad Shalit," Haniya said in a statement in central Gaza, referring to the Israel Defense Forces soldier kidnapped by Gaza militants in June, 2006 cross-border raid.

"It is hard to see thousands of prisoners still held in Israeli jails," He added.

People celebrated in the streets of the Hamas-controlled coastal territory, and handed out sweets in support of Hezbollah.

"Today is a great victory for the resistance movements and to Hezbollah, said Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri. "It shows that the only successful way to free the prisoners is by kidnapping soldiers."

Pakistan: Bomb destroys girls' school

Story Highlights
* Bomb blast destroys government-run girls' high school in Pakistan
* Militants detonated an improvised explosive device at school in Swat Valley
* Militants have destroyed more than 30 schools in the valley in the past month

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Bombings by militants have destroyed a government-run girls' high school and several shops in the Swat Valley of northern Pakistan, police said Friday.

Militants detonated an improvised explosive device at the school around 2am, destroying 10 classrooms and two offices, Officer Bashir Khan of the Kabal police station said.

The blast also damaged nearby homes. No one was hurt, Khan said, and no one claimed responsibility.

The school was in the village of Tatano Bandai in Pakistan's Swat Valley, about 93 miles (150 kilometers) north of Peshawar in the North-West Frontier Province.

Around the same time as the school bombing, militants blew up several shops, including barber shops and cell phone stores, in the Charbagh area of the Swat Valley, police in the region told CNN.

There were no reports of injuries from those attacks, but the power was out in part of the area, said Shaukat Ali Khan, the coordination officer for the Swat district.

Militants have destroyed more than 30 schools in the Swat Valley in the past month, according to the NWFP's Ministry of Education.

The region is home to radical cleric Maulana Fazlullah, who has called girls' schools un-Islamic and warned families to remove their daughters from such schools.

Pakistan's Taliban have denied involvement in school bombings.

A Hamas member of parliament escaped injury in a third blast, Hamas said.

The Islamist group Hamas blamed the attacks on members of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party. There was no immediate comment from Fatah.

The two factions have been bitterly divided since Hamas drove Abbas' security forces from Gaza last year.

Five of the deaths resulted from an explosion Friday night behind a tent on the beach, the hospital spokesman said. Among the dead were two members of Hamas and a girl 5 to 7 years old, he said. The identities of the other two fatalities were undetermined.

He said 20 people were wounded in that blast, which occurred about 9:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. ET).

Earlier in the day, one man died and two people were wounded when a bomb exploded at a coffee shop.

The Hamas politician escaped injury from an explosion Friday morning outside his home.

* Four civilains killed, three others wounded in shooting
* Soldiers feared vehicle was part of insurgent attack, according to ISAF statement

(CNN) -- Soldiers from NATO's International Security Assistance Force fired on a vehicle after it failed to stop at a checkpoint in southern Afghanistan, killing four civilians, according to an ISAF statement.

The incident took place Saturday in the Sangin district of Helmand province, the statement said.

After directing the vehicle to stop, the soldiers fired warning shots, "but were eventually forced to fire at it when it refused to stop, fearing an insurgent attack," the ISAF statement said.

Three wounded civilians were treated for their injuries. Two other people in the vehicle were not hurt.

"ISAF deeply regrets this unnecessary incident caused by the reckless actions of the vehicle driver," the statement said, adding the incident will be investigated.

Blasts in Indian city kill at least 29

* At least 88 people wounded as blasts strike within 70 minutes of one another
* Muslim militant group Indian Mujahedeen reportedly claims responsibility
* Attacks an effort to cause panic, 'unsettle the country,' official say

(CNN) -- At least 29 people were killed and 88 wounded in 17 blasts within a little more than an hour Saturday night in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, police and government officials said.

All metropolitan areas in India have been put on high alert.

"I appeal to the people of Gujarat to remain calm and not let these terrorists be successful in instilling fear," said Narendera Modi, chief minister of Gujarat state, which encompasses Ahmedabad.

Several media outlets and the country's Intelligence Bureau received an e-mail, purportedly from the Muslim militant group Indian Mujahedeen, warning about a possible attack. The group has claimed responsibility for two similar attacks in the past nine months in northern India.

The Islamic militant group Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami, the Movement of the Islamic Holy War -- known as HuJi -- claimed responsibility for the bombings, said CNN-IBN, CNN's sister network.

Cross-pollination between terror groups can make it difficult to separate them, analysts said...

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Scores of people have been killed and more than 200 injured after a series of suicide bombings in Kirkuk and Baghdad created havoc in Iraq Monday.

A suicide bomber helped kill at least 36 people and wounded 116 others after detonating explosives during a rally in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, a police official told CNN.

Thousands of Kurds had gathered in central Kirkuk to protest an election law that was passed by the Iraqi parliament last week but rejected by the Iraqi presidency council.

Palestinian factions trample rights, watchdog group says

* Human Rights Watch report criticizes Hamas, Fatah practices
* Arbitrary arrests, torture and abuse of detainees common, report says
* Activists and organizers targeted by both sides, watchdog group says
* Report places part of blame on Israel's policies toward Palestinians

(CNN) -- Infighting between the two main Palestinian factions has led to arbitrary arrests, torture and abuse of detainees by both sides, Human Rights Watch said in a report released Wednesday.

Fatah and Hamas "have carried out a wave of unlawful arrests against opponents in recent days," and "Hamas forces physically abused some of the people they apprehended," the group said in its 113-page report.

Fatah supporter Mahmoud Abu Shatat, 23, told CNN he lost his leg after a brutal torture session by members of political rival Hamas. They burst into his home, he says, looking for weapons.

"They shot me in the leg, blindfolded and handcuffed me, beat me, then shot me again," he said.

He said he has no idea why he was targeted, other than for supporting Fatah.

Security forces on both sides act with impunity, the report says...

This was the lead story on CNN earlier today. When I read the headline and started watching the opening of the video report, I thought to myself, "Hmm...what are the chances that Muslims are involved?" Sure enough, just near the end of the article, you'll find this reference:

Story Highlights
* NEW: Both attackers were arrested
* 16 police officers killed, 16 wounded, Xinhua reports
* Violence comes just four days before start of the Olympic Games in Beijing
* Government said they cracked five terrorist groups in region last month

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- At least 16 police officers were killed, and 16 more were wounded, after an attack on a border police station in western China on Monday morning, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The attackers crashed a heavy truck into the station and detonated two grenades, according to Xinhua. The incident happened in Kashi, in the Xinjiang Uygher Autonomous Region.

The violence comes just four days before the start of the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.

Last month, police said they had cracked five terrorist groups in the autonomous region where attackers hit the police station on Monday. Authorities said the groups were allegedly plotting to sabotage the Olympics, Xinhua reported.

The Xinjiang Uygher Autonomous Region is home to a Sunni Muslim ethnic minority.

Uygurs in Xinjiang are supposed to enjoy regional autonomy, as guaranteed by China's constitution, but some seek independence.

Millions of Han Chinese, the country's dominant ethnic group, have migrated into Xinjiang over the past 60 years, prompting complaints that they dominate local politics, culture and commerce at the Uyghers'

The dissatisfaction has turned violent at times, including several and sometimes deadly bus bombings in 1992 in the provincial capital, Urumqi.

Officials blamed such incidents on Uygher groups who seek an independent Muslim state.

China insists only a small minority of Uygher support the separatists.

Chinese Islamic group threatens Olympics

BEIJING, China (AP) -- A Chinese Islamic faction that has threatened to attack the Olympics released a new video, warning Muslims to stay away from the Beijing Games and avoid buses, trains, planes and buildings used by Chinese, a U.S. group that monitors militant organizations said Thursday.

On the six-minute video issued Wednesday, two days before the opening of the games, a representative of the Turkistan Islamic Party reiterates the group's threats against the Olympics made in a video last month, according to SITE Intelligence Group. It shows images of the Beijing Olympics logo in flames and an explosion over an Olympics venue.

"Choose your side," says the speaker, grasping a rifle and dressed in a black turban and camouflage with his face masked. "Do not stay on the same bus, on the same train, on the same plane, in the same buildings, or any place the Chinese are," he warns Muslims, according to SITE...

'Surge' may not be enough in Afghanistan, commander says

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A troop "surge" is credited with stemming violence in Iraq, but could a similar strategy work in Afghanistan? A top U.S. military commander isn't counting on it.

In 2007, as part of the surge strategy, President Bush sent roughly 30,000 additional troops to Iraq in an attempt to improve security.

That effort coincided with a drop in violence, and, now that the troops in Iraq are returning to pre-surge levels, the Army is identifying combat units that could go Afghanistan to fill the need for 10,000 additional troops, military officials said.

But a different type of surge is needed in Afghanistan, said Gen. David McKiernan, the top NATO commander there.

"There is no magic number of soldiers that are needed on the ground to win this campaign," McKiernan said. "What we need is security of the people. We need governance. We need reconstruction and development."

Eight dead in Algeria car bombing

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) -- Explosives packed into a vehicle detonated outside a police station in northern Algeria, killing eight civilians and wounding eight others, the national radio said Sunday.

An officer fired on the vehicle as it was approaching the police station in Zemmouri, on Saturday night, causing the car to explode before it hit the building, the radio report said, citing security officials.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack, and the radio report gave no further details.

Zemmouri is located in the Boumerdes region, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of the capital, Algiers.

An August 3 bombing at a police station in another northern city, Tizi Ouzou, injured more than 20 people. Police responded with a security sweep in which 12 Islamists were killed in the restive Kabylie region, east of Algiers, the Interior Ministry said Saturday.

Algeria's al-Qaeda affiliate -- al-Qaeda in Islamic North Africa -- claimed responsibility for that attack, and said it had been a suicide car bombing.

The group, formerly known as the GSPC, grew out of an insurgency in the 1990s. The violence was prompted by the army's cancellation of 1992 legislative elections that an Islamist party was poised to win.

The violence, which killed as many as 200,000, had been waning until the GSPC's affiliated with al-Qaida in recent years.

Many recent attacks in Algeria have targeted the national security services and military, while others have struck foreigners.

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Gunmen shot and killed three international aid workers and their driver in an ambush on their convoy in a province south of Kabul Wednesday, authorities said.

All three aid workers were women: an American citizen, a Canadian and an Irish national, said Abdul Majeed Latifi, security chief of Logar province where the attack occurred.

The women worked for the New York-based aid group, International Rescue Committee, said Logar Governor Abdullah Wardak.
The aid agency, which provides relief to refugees and victims of armed conflict around the world, could not immediately be reached for comment.

The aid workers were in a two-car convoy that was headed to Kabul when gunmen opened fire on them in Pul-i-Alam, the capital of Logar, Wardak said.

No one has claimed responsibility for the assault.
