I thought that we might start a thread under this topic devoted to tracking acts of terror perpetrated around the world by Islamic Fundamentalists.

Today from CNN:

Quote:
Five killed in northern Gaza blast

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Five people were killed and more than 60 were injured Thursday when an explosion ripped through a senior Hamas commander's house in northern Gaza, Palestinian security sources said.

The blast happened at a house belonging to Ahmed Hamudi, a senior Hamas commander, Palestinian security and medical sources said.

Eyewitnesses called it a "work accident."

The Israel Defense Forces said it was not involved, calling the incident an internal Palestinian matter.

Al-Maliki aide: Iraqis mull leaving bilateral security talks

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq is contemplating pulling out of security talks with the United States and developing their own legislation that would dictate the shape of the American military presence in the country, an Iraqi official said Thursday.

From Prophet of Doom: Move Over Neville...Here Comes the Iraq Study Group:

Quote:
Thanks to American blundering in Iraq, Iran now maintains a land crescent into northern Israel. And you can rest assured that they will use it...

From Prophet of Doom: The War on Terror - An Open Letter:

Quote:
What Is Going To Happen In Iraq?

Iraqis will elect a Shi'ite government and they will impose an Islamic state. The Suni's will fight them and America will be caught in the middle of a civil war. It will be like Vietnam all over again.

Under Islamic law and unified with Iran, Iraq will become what it was not - a clear and present danger to America. We will have set our actual enemy and the enemy of freedom on the throne. And we will have squandered American prestige and wasted thousands of American lives and billions of dollars in the process.

As in the case of Vietnam where we allowed Americans to die until we had achieved "peace with honor," so it will be in Iraq. The peace accords were of no value because the signatories did not share our values. The Communists ignored the document and imposed their will on the people. It was as if we had never been there.

Of course, many Americans are interested in other "News." This appeared on the same page as one of CNN's other Headline Stories: Hogan's wife, 48, dating teen

Honor killing in Canada: Father gets first-degree murder charge

Given the political and social climate today, Canadian authorities could easily have opted for a lesser charge, and mumbled about respecting the cultures of immigrants. Instead, to their credit, they have charged Muhammad Parvez with first-degree murder for killing his daughter after she refused to wear hijab.

May this be just the beginning of a general awakening to stealth jihad initiatives in the West, and a toughening of legal sanctions against Sharia norms and Islamic cultural practices that are at odds with our societies and laws.

Aqsa Parvez deserves no less.

More:

Quote:
The father of a Mississauga teen killed last year has been charged today with first-degree murder in connection with her death.

Muhammad Parvez, 57, appeared in a Brampton courtroom today where he was officially charged. The charge is an indication investigators believe the girl’s killing was pre-meditated.

Parvez was arrested in early December after his daughter Aqsa, 16, was found strangled in the family's Mississauga home.

Paramedics revived her, but she died later in hospital....

The death drew international attention after her friends said she had argued with her father over her desire to shun the hijab, a traditional Muslim scarf that covers the head and shoulders....

Thousands of women -- as young as four -- caught in the middle of the struggle between rebel forces and government-backed militias have become victims of rape, they say, with some aid groups claiming it is being used as a weapon of ethnic cleansing.

One quote from Prophet of Doom - "If you are a Muslim: Welcome"

Quote:
Even though the earliest Islamic sources gave Muhammad and his bandits a special exception to rape so that they could force the female captives from the towns they victimized to have sex with them, involuntary sex is still rape. Cleric faces U.S. extradition after appeal loss

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza moved a step closer Friday to extradition to the U.S., where he faces terrorism-related charges.

UK authorities had ordered his extradition, but he appealed. Britain's High Court dismissed the appeal Friday, a spokesman for Britain's Home Office said.

That gives the Egyptian-born cleric, who lives in London, 14 days to apply to the High Court for permission to appeal to the House of Lords.

The one-eyed, hook-handed cleric faces 11 terrorism-related charges in the U.S. They include conspiracy in connection with a 1998 kidnapping in Yemen and conspiring with others to establish an Islamic jihad, or holy war, training camp in rural Bly, Oregon in 1999.

Abu Hamza, one of the highest-profile radical Islamic figures in Britain, is already in prison for inciting racial hatred at his North London mosque. He was convicted in Britain on 11 terror-related charges and sentenced to seven years prison in 2006...

Regarding the Hamas "truce" in Gaza:

Quote:
- and that the only function of the peace treaty, or "hudna," is to give the Islamic armies time to regroup for a renewed offensive, and should, in theory, last no more than ten years.
Koranic verses 3:28 and 16:106, as well as Muhammad's famous assertion, "War is deceit," have all led to the formulation of a number of doctrines of dissimulation-the most notorious among them being the doctrine of "Taqiyya," which permits Muslims to lie and dissemble whenever they are under the authority of the infidel. Deception has such a prominent role that renowned Muslim scholar Ibn al-Arabi declares: "[I]n the Hadith, practicing deceit in war is well demonstrated. Indeed, its need is more stressed than [the need for] courage" (The Al Qaeda Reader, 142).

You can find the complete article, "Know your enemy" here.

Here's one of the comments by a reader of the above article:

Quote:
I spent nearly 3 years working in Iraq as a civilian for the US Army in the oil reconstruction effort. (Not KBR.) During that time I saw many examples, even in country, of people and companies who believed that if they closed their eyes and wished real hard they would not be at a war. I am sure this attitude contributed to extra deaths and injuries amoung civilian contractors. For the record - civilian contractor deaths and injuries are not included in the official casuality count.
Understanding the historical basis and religious mindset of our enemies is not bigotry nor is it condemning all who practice a religion. Unless we acknowledge reality, which includes the religious and historical basis for the current war we are engaged in, the end results will be unnecessary deaths and destruction.

Pope meets with Iran-based Muslim group, method for dialogue agreed on

Vatican City, Apr 30, 2008 / 04:06 pm (CNA).- Following today's general audience, Benedict XVI received a group of Iranian Muslims who have been meeting biannually for the last 12 years with the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue. The dialogue between the Vatican and the Muslim group resulted in an agreement on faith and reason, violence and religion and the method for dialogue.

The Vatican is being represented in the discussions by a delegation led by Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, while the president of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization of Tehran, Iran is leading their group. Representatives from both groups have been holding meetings in Rome to study the theme of: "Faith and Reason in Christianity and Islam".

During the course of the discussions, which came to a close on Wednesday, the two delegations agreed upon the following points:

1. "Faith and reason are both gifts of God to mankind."

2. "Faith and reason do not contradict each other, but faith might in some cases be above reason, but never against it."

3. "Faith and reason are intrinsically non-violent. Neither reason nor faith should be used for violence; unfortunately, both of them have been sometimes misused to perpetrate violence. In any case, these events cannot question either reason or faith."

4. "Both sides agreed to further co-operate in order to promote genuine religiosity, in particular spirituality, to encourage respect for symbols considered to be sacred and to promote moral values."

5. "Christians and Muslims should go beyond tolerance, accepting differences, while remaining aware of commonalties and thanking God for them. They are called to mutual respect, thereby condemning derision of religious beliefs."

6. "Generalization should be avoided when speaking of religions. Differences of confessions with Christianity and Islam, diversity of historical contexts are important factors to be considered."

7. "Religious traditions cannot be judged on the basis of a single verse or a passage present in their respective holy Books. A holistic vision as well as an adequate hermeneutical method is necessary for a fair understanding of them".

Speaking with the Iranian news agency IRNA after a meeting with Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, the head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Mostafavi said that the two had discussed other ways to improve dialogue between Catholics and Muslims.

One of the ideas under discussion included holding meetings dedicated to religious-themed theatre and cinema. Another proposal floated in the meeting was to facilitate exchanges between scientific institutes and universities linked to the Catholic Church and Shia research centers in Iran.

Speaking of Islam and the Pope, remember the last Pope (who is now being referred to as, "John Paul the Great") kissing the Quran?

I found this discussion thread online:

Quote:
What about the Pope kissing the Islamic Koran? Is that Heresy?

God said, "Do not be bound together with unbelievers for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?" 2 Corinthians 6:14:

And, the "Best Answer" - Chosen by Voters:

Quote:
According to the following eyewitness, the Pope kissed the Koran as a sign that he has also great respect for Islam and that he was aware of the suffering of the Iraqi people.

The Chaldean Patriarch of Iraq, Raphael I Bidawid is the spiritual guide of the majority of Iraq's one million Christians -- who still celebrate their liturgy in Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus.

Raphael I Bidawid, Patriarch of the Chaldeans told in an interview:

“On May 14th I was received by the Pope, together with a delegation composed of the Shiite imam of Khadum mosque and the Sunni President of the council of administration of the Iraqi Islamic Bank. At the end of the audience the Pope bowed to the Muslim holy book the Koran presented to him by the delegation and he kissed it as a sign of respect. The photo of that gesture has been shown repeatedly on Iraqi television and it demonstrates that the Pope is not only aware of the suffering of the Iraqi people, he has also great respect for Islam.”

With love in Christ...

Defendants in JFK terror plot head to U.S.

Story Highlights
Three men are accused of a plot to blow up fuel lines and tanks at the airport
A Trinidad and Tobago judge ordered the three to be extradited in February
Prosecutors: The men not only plotted but carried out moves toward bombing JFK

(CNN) -- Three men accused last year of a plot to bomb New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport were headed to the United States late Tuesday after their fight against extradition from Trinidad and Tobago was rejected by an appeals court there, Trinidad and U.S. officials said.

Kareem Ibrahim, Abdul Kadir and Abdel Nur are accused of a plot to blow up fuel lines and tanks at the airport. They were jailed in Trinidad and Tobago while a fourth defendant, Russel DeFreitas, already has pleaded innocent in New York.

A Trinidad and Tobago judge ordered the three to be extradited in February, but it was delayed until this week when the appeals judge rejected their appeal on a technicality, Trinidad and Tobago Attorney General David West said.

The appeals judge ruled the defendants filed their arguments "out of time," and their lawyers had not filed papers to explain why so "the judge had no choice but to strike out their appeal," West said.

West said the men were placed on an FBI plane at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The FBI's spokesman in Miami confirmed that the three defendants were put on a flight to the United States on Tuesday evening.

Their lawyers had earlier argued that Trinidad and Tobago law does not allow for extradition on terrorism conspiracy charges.

U.S. prosecutors say the men not only plotted but carried out actual actions toward bombing the airport. Some of their conversations were secretly taped by an informant, according to court documents filed by the government.

A 40-mile aviation fuel pipeline runs from a fuel tank farm at JFK through Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens, according to New York Police.

Ibrahim is from Trinidad. Nur and Kadir are from Guyana. The three, who all have maintained their innocence, were being held at a maximum security prison in Trinidad.

Of course it's not mentioned anywhere in the article but I was curious about the motivations of these 3 men. Do you think perhaps there might be a connection between them and fundamental Islam?

Israel closes Gaza crossings

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israel has closed crossings between Israel and Gaza except for Erez crossing on Gaza's northern border, a military source said Wednesday.

The closing of the crossings came a day after four rockets were fired from Gaza into southern Israel by Islamic Jihad. The militant group said its members fired the rockets as revenge for the killing of one of the group's military commanders in the West Bank.

The rocket fire violated the truce that went into effect last week between Israel and Hamas leaders in Gaza. Israel said that under the conditions of the truce, the Hamas leadership in Gaza is responsible for all militant attacks on Israel -- not just those carried out by Hamas militants.

The cease-fire does not apply in the West Bank.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for the Israeli prime minister, called Tuesday's attacks "a grave violation" of the truce agreement.

A Hamas spokesman said Tuesday the group remains committed to the cease-fire despite the attacks.

And, a story linked to the one above:

Quote:
Hamas: We want truce, despite rocket attacks

Story Highlights
NEW: Hamas: We're still committed to cease-fire agreement with Israel
Palestinian militants in Gaza fire rockets and a mortar round into Israel
Incidents reported to be first violation of nearly week-long truce
Israeli troops also killed two militants in the West Bank on Tuesday

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Hamas leaders in Gaza are still committed to a cease-fire agreement with Israel despite numerous rocket and mortar strikes Tuesday, a Hamas spokesman said.

The Israeli military has not responded, but a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the attacks could jeopardize the fragile truce, which took effect Thursday.

"It is clear that these rocket attacks present a grave violation of the understandings achieved by Egypt to achieve calm in the south," Mark Regev said.

Islamic Jihad militants in Gaza said they fired three rockets into southern Israel on Tuesday, violating a truce between Israel and Gaza's Hamas leadership.

Two Israelis received minor injuries when one of the rockets struck the southern Israeli town of Sderot, a frequent target of such militant strikes, Israeli ambulance services said. Another rocket struck the town, causing damage, and the third rocket landed in an open field, a police spokesman said.

An Islamic Jihad source said its militants fired the rockets in revenge for the Israeli killing of one of its commanders in the West Bank.

The rocket firings followed a mortar attack from Gaza into Israel earlier in the day that the Israeli military said marked the first reported violation of the truce.

No one was hurt, and the mortar shell did not cause any damage. There has been no reported Israeli response.

Israel said that under the conditions of the truce, the Hamas leadership in Gaza is responsible for all militant attacks on Israel, not just those carried out by Hamas militants.

Earlier Tuesday, the Israeli military said it killed a senior member of Islamic Jihad and another militant with him during a raid in Nablus, in the West Bank.

The senior militant, Tareq Jumaa Ahmed Abu Ghali, opened fire at the Israeli soldiers as they tried to arrest him, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The soldiers fired back, killing Abu Ghali and the other militant, the IDF said.

The Egyptian-brokered cease-fire agreement is between Israel and Hamas leaders in Gaza and does not apply to the West Bank, which is controlled by the Palestinian Authority under President Mahmoud Abbas. The truce is supposed to last six months.

The terms stipulate that Palestinian militants stop attacks on Israel. Israel, in turn, will halt raids inside Gaza and ease its economic blockade if the truce holds.

Israel has repeatedly said that the truce is a first step toward a broader cease-fire agreement that must include the release of an Israeli soldier who was taken hostage two years ago.

Ofer Dekel, Israel's point man for the negotiations to release Cpl. Gilad Shalit, is expected to arrive in Cairo, Egypt, on Tuesday, an Israeli official said. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met Tuesday with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Sharm el-Sheikh.

A day before his trip to the Egyptian resort city, Olmert held "security consultations" with Dekel and Defense Minister Ehud Barak on how to expedite Shalit's release.

And the beat goes on... The poor Israelis will never know peace no matter what they give away... and their neighbours will always fight while saying "Peace!" Assalamualaikum does not mean Shalom. Such a sad, sorry state of affairs but some effort must still be made at peace, albeit in vain from our point of view.

This was the lead story from "The Religion of Peace.com." The caption on the photo reads:

Quote:
Islamic-minded immigrants in Belgium recently raped a young woman for not wearing a veil. (Presumably, the police are investigating to determine how the victim was dressed).

From, "The Pedophile Pirate:"

Quote:
Such a grotesque act disqualified Muhammad from his alleged calling. What's more, his personal perversity had a lasting legacy. Muslims follow his example. While most of what happens in the Islamic world escapes our purview, as Islam is hostile to all freedoms, including press and inquiry, we have gained glimpses in Afghanistan and Iraq. There, virginal young girls are frequently raped by Muslim men. And as you would expect in a culture influenced by Muhammad, the victims are shamed, not the perpetrators.

Again, from Prophet of Doom:

Quote:
The "normal" prayer recited by a Muslim as he or she is terrorizing and murdering infidels is "Allahu Akbar." It means: "Allah is the Greatest," or "Allah is the Most Great." Muhammad called it the "Islamic Prayer of Fear," and he used to say it every time he terrorized, plundered, raped, enslaved, and or murdered innocent people.

"Allahu Akbar," like "Tawakkalt ala Allah," remains a dual confession. By repeating it, as most every Muslim murderer does before and during their terrorist acts, they are confessing to the crime. They, like the Muslim goons who hijacked the four passenger jets on 9/11, are telling us that they are good Muslims killing for Allah. They are telling us that they are following Muhammad's example

This report from "JihadWatch.org:"

Quote:
June 25, 2008
“He is not a Muslim….But he is being influenced and intoxicated by the imagery and appeal of Jihadist and other internet violence”

"White boy, 12, suspected of being Islamic extremist recruit after he showed beheading videos to classmates," from Daily Mail, June 25:

A 12-year-old white schoolboy is among 120 people being dealt with by police in a new project combating Islamic-inspired violent extremism, it was revealed today.

Why is it necessary to indicate that he’s white? If he was black or Muslim—or better, both—would the headline have dared to indicate as much?

The child, who has only been identified by the initials BC, was reported by his school in West Yorkshire after he was found circulating video clips of terrorists beheading Westerners.

Sick films were distributed to classmates on their mobile phones, prompting a teacher to march the boy to the local police station.

Police revealed the child arrived in Britain as an asylum seeker in July 2005, and at the age of eight allegedly assisted a nine-year-old and a 12-year-old boy in the forced rape of his sister, although he was never prosecuted.

Where exactly did this “white boy” arrive from? And had he been prosecuted for his role in this rape then, or at least taught a lesson, maybe today he wouldn’t be distributing “sick videos.”

West Yorkshire Chief Constable Sir Norman Bettison revealed: 'The white child that we are working with has been downloading Jihadist beheading videos and circulating them around school.

'That was bad enough, but he also has an unnatural interest in guns and weapons. He spoke openly of his wish to be a sniper and spoke of his curiosity of what it would be like to kill someone.'

Ah, there’s the connection: jihad and violence (“guns,” “weapons,” and a “curiosity for killing”). Clearly, the white boy has—like many of his race—misinterpreted the “true,” “peaceful” meaning of “jihad.”

Sir Norman described BC as an 'angelic looking boy' and a police mugshot shown to delegates depicted a fair-haired child so short that his face was barely in the frame of the camera.

Newsflash: physiognomy is a defunct science.

'He is at risk of being a violent young man and a threat to society,' the chief constable said.

'He is not a Muslim. He is not driven by ideology - he is too young to spell the word. But he is being influenced and intoxicated by the imagery and appeal of Jihadist and other internet violence.'

Could it be because his suppressed sense of “masculinity”—his innate need to be “mischievous,” as only boys can—has few other outlets in the increasingly neutered and emasculated culture of Western Europe?

Sir Norman also warned the Association of Chief Police Officers' annual conference in Liverpool that Islamic extremism was spreading like a 'virus' and urged every parent - particularly Muslims - to address the issue with their children.

'The al Qaida brand of violent extremism continues to spread like a virus infecting young minds,' he said.

[…]

Sir Norman said of BC: 'His schoolteacher pitched up at a local police station with him, because they were at their wits' end as to what to do with him. We are working with him (BC), and his father and his school.'

The chief constable said the pilot project, which is being operated by West Yorkshire, the Metropolitan and Lancashire forces, had been running for nine months.

The number of suspects so far uncovered was 'higher than expected', he added.

Already 124 people have been referred to the police and other agencies for attention by schools, community leaders, mosques and others.

'It is a means of bridging between the community and the police and identifying people who might be attracted to, or vulnerable to, being radicalised,' said Sir Norman. [...]

But why would non-Muslims be in danger of succumbing to Islamic—jihadi beheadings—“radicalization” in the first place?

'Throwing the book at them in terms of the Prevention of Terrorism Act would be complete overkill,' the chief constable said.

'We are not talking about criminal actions. We are talking about vulnerable kids.'

The 12-year-old boy came from a single parent, working class family with siblings living elsewhere, said the chief constable. [...]

A lot more truly “vulnerable” kids—homeless, orphaned, sexually-abused, destitute, poverty-stricken, name it—are not in the habit of gleefully circulating video clips of jihadist beheadings. (Not to mention the fact that they probably can’t afford mobile phones in the first place.)

Two other cases highlighted by the senior policeman were Muslim youths, known only as NH and YH, who were both 15 when they were reported by their communities because they were showing extremist and racist tendencies.

Since most of the indigenous population of the UK is white and non-Muslim, “showing extremist and racist tendencies” are code for “they hate infidels.”

Another piece from JihadWatch.org:

Quote:
Iran: Our nukes are peaceful, but we'll nuke you if you resist

War Is Peace Alert: those nukes are not hard to make from our peaceful nuclear program if you give us trouble, says Larijani. "Iran issues warning over nuclear program," by Ali Akbar Dareini for Associated Press, June 25 (thanks to JCB):

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's parliament speaker warned the West on Wednesday that it may face "a done deal" if it provokes Iran, a stern hint that Tehran could build nuclear weapons if attacked.

The speaker, Ali Larijani, who was once Iran's top nuclear negotiator, also warned that a "short opportunity is left" for a deal with Iran over its nuclear program, which the U.S. and some of its allies fear is aimed at producing a bomb.

Iran has long denied it intends to build a nuclear weapon, saying its program is meant only to generate electricity. Larijani, one of Iran's most powerful politicians, did not directly warn that Iran could change its intentions, but his vague comment appeared aimed at raising that possibility.

Larijani pointed to recent comments by Mohamed ElBaradei, the U.N. nuclear watchdog chief, who said in an interview last week that a military strike on Iran could turn the Mideast into a "ball of fire" and "prompt Iran, even if it didn't produce a nuclear weapon today, to resort to an emergency plan to produce a nuclear weapon."

Larijani said the West should "take Mr. ElBaradei's warnings seriously."

"Don't provoke Iran otherwise you will face a done deal that will block the path of your return to a compromise with Iran," Larijani told an open session of the parliament broadcast live on state radio Wednesday.

The phrase he used in Farsi, "amal-e anjam shodeh," means literally "an accomplished act" or "fait accompli." [...]

A hard-line newspaper also hinted on Wednesday that Iran may weaponize its nuclear program if attacked.

"Even if Iran's nuclear facilities are totally destroyed — a possibility that is precisely zero — it will easily be revived within a short period of time, but with the difference that it may prompt a fundamental reconsideration in intentions," the daily Kayhan said in an editorial.

A top commander of the elite Revolutionary Guards on Wednesday warned that an attack on Iran would draw the U.S. into "a new tragedy."

"If you want to move towards Iran, make sure you will bring artificial legs and walking sticks because you will not have any legs to return on should you come," the television quoted Mohammad Hejazi, a top Guards figure, as saying.

Iran has spread its nuclear facilities throughout the country and has built key portions underground to protect from possible Israeli or American airstrikes....

Robertson: Darfur now a living hell

Story Highlights
* Rape, hunger exacerbate hardships in Darfur refugee camps
* U.N. peacekeeping force underequipped and undermanned
* Millions of people have been affected by conflict

(CNN) -- Life for the millions of people in Darfur's aid camps is a living hell. Women are often raped while out collecting firewood and security is so bad aid trucks can't get through, resulting in food handouts being halved.

So far this year 66 trucks belonging to the U.N.'s World Food Programme have been hijacked, three drivers killed in attacks and thirty more drivers are still missing.

A United Nations peacekeeping force with the power to shoot back if attacked has been deployed in Darfur in recent months, but despite being the largest ever sanctioned by the U.N. it is undermanned and under-equipped. The troops say there is no peace to keep and their troops are being attacked.

Recently 60 militiamen on horseback raided a peacekeeping patrol, stealing soldiers' weapons, ammunition, money and even their cell phones.

The crisis in Darfur first began when rebels who are mostly ethnic African farmers attacked government outposts in 2002 because they wanted power.

The Sudanese government repressed the insurgency, bombing villages and arming nomadic Arab herdsmen, Janjaweed, who have a history of land disputes with the farmers.

In five years of war the U.N. says more than four million people have been affected: Two-and-a-half million people forced from their homes and more than 300,000 killed.

Sudanese officials dispute those numbers claiming only 10,000 have died -- a number they say is normal for five years of war.

U.S. President George W. Bush calls the killings genocide and has put sanctions on Sudan. The U.N. says Sudan's government is guilty of crimes against humanity and of violating international human rights laws every bit as heinous and serious they say as genocide.

In February 2008, a fresh wave of killing forced 58,000 people to flee their homes as government troops and Janjaweed militiamen retaliated against rebels. A U.N. report said Sudan broke international law as 115 innocent civilians were killed using tactics similar to those employed in 2003, 2004, the worst years of the war.

This detail caught my eye:

A few quotes from the "Islamic Quotes" section of Prophet of Doom:

Quote:
Ishaq:288 "Allah divided the booty stolen from the first caravan after he made spoils permissible. He gave four-fifths to those He had allowed to take it and one-fifth to His Apostle."

Quote:
Tabari VII:29, Ishaq:289 "The Apostle heard that Abu Sufyan [a Meccan merchant] was coming from Syria with a large caravan containing their money and their merchandise. He was accompanied by only thirty men."

Quote:
Ishaq:289 "Muhammad summoned the Muslims and said, 'This is the Quraysh caravan containing their property. Go out and attack it. Perhaps Allah will give it to us as prey."

Quote:
Bukhari:V5B59N702 "Allah did not admonish anyone who had not participated in the Ghazwa [raid] of Badr, for in fact, Allah's Apostle had only gone out in search of the Quraysh caravan so that he could rob it. But Allah arranged for the Muslims and their enemy to meet by surprise. I was at the Aqaba pledge with Allah's Apostle when we gave our lives in submission, but the Badr battle is more popular amongst the people. I was never stronger or wealthier than I was when I followed the Prophet on a Ghazwa.'"

Quote:
Tabari VII:29 "When Abu Sufyan heard that Muhammad's Companions were on their way to intercept his caravan, he sent a message to the Quraysh. 'Muhammad is going to attack our caravan, so protect your merchandise.' When the Quraysh heard this, the people of Mecca hastened to defend their property and protect their men as they were told Muhammad was lying in wait for them."

Quote:
Ishaq:293, Tabari VII:30 The prophet marched forward and spent the night near Badr with his Companions. While the Prophet was standing in prayer [asking Allah to help him steal] some Quraysh water-carriers came to the well. Among these was a black slave. Muhammad's men seized him and brought him to the Messenger's bivouac. They ordered him to salute Allah's Apostle. Then they questioned him about Abu Sufyan. When the slave began to tell them about the protecting force, it was unwelcome news, for the only object of their raid was the caravan."

Quote:
Ishaq:340 "Surely Badr was one of the world's great wonders. The roads to death are plain to see. Disobedience causes a people to perish. They became death's pawns. We had sought their caravan, nothing else. But they came to us and there was no way out. So we thrust our shafts and swung our swords severing their heads. Our swords glittered as they killed. The banner of error was held by Satan. He betrayed the evil ones, those prone to treachery. He led them to death crying, 'Fear Allah. He is invincible!' On that day a thousand spirits were mustered on excited white stallions. Allah's army fought with us. Under our banner, Gabriel attacked and killed them."

Quote:
Tabari VII:98 "The Messenger ordered Zayd [the prophet's former slave turned adoptive son] out on a raid in which he captured a Quraysh caravan led by Abu Sufyan at a watering place in Najd.... A number of their merchants set out with a large amount of silver since this was the main part of their merchandise. They hired a man to guide them along this route. Zayd captured the caravan and its goods but was unable to capture the men. He brought the caravan to the Prophet."[If this isn't piracy and terror the words need to be redefined.]"

Quote:
Tabari VII:98 "The reason for this expedition was the Quraysh said, 'Muhammad has damaged our trade, and sits astride our road. If we stay in Mecca we will consume our capital.' ...The news of the caravan reached the Prophet, as did the information that it contained much wealth and silver vessels. Zayd therefore intercepted it and made himself master of their caravan. The fifth (khums) was twenty thousand dirhams; Allah's Apostle took it and divided the other four fifths among the members of the raiding party. Furat was taken captive. They said to him. 'If you accept Islam the Messenger will not kill you.'"

Quote:
Tabari VII:10 "In Ramadhan, seven months after the Hijrah, Muhammad entrusted a white war banner to Hamzah with the command of thirty Emigrants. Their aim was to intercept a Quraysh caravan."

And it goes on and on. I wonder if the "militants" in the article might have some connection to Islam? Hmm...

Pakistani militants set ski resort hotel on fire

Story Highlights
* Militants set fire to a hotel at Pakistan's only ski resort Thursday
* Militants forced their way into the state-run hotel in the Swat Valley
* The resort is located near the Afghanistan border, 300km from Islamabad

SLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Militants set fire to a hotel at Pakistan's only ski resort Thursday, as security in the Swat Valley continued to deteriorate despite a month-old peace deal.

Militants forced their way into the state-run hotel in the northwestern tourist valley early Thursday morning, ransacked it and set it on fire, said Sardar Rehim Shahzad, district coordinator for Swat police.

The hotel, the only one at the Malam Jabba ski resort, sustained significant damage, he told CNN.

The resort is located near the Afghanistan border and about 300km (186 miles) from the capital city of Islamabad. It was shut down last summer after militants overran the area, keeping tourists away, Shahzad said.

Swat Valley, located in North West Frontier Province (NWFP), was once Pakistan's biggest tourist destination. Aside from the ski resort, it was a draw for trout-fishing enthusiasts and visitors to the ancient Buddhist ruins in the area.

In recent months, however, militants bent on imposing fundamentalist Islamic law, or Sharia, have unleashed a wave of violence across the NWFP which has claimed hundreds of lives, many of them security personnel.

The militants want women to wear veils, beards for men and to ban music and television.

After months of bloody battles, the government in May reached a peace deal with fighters loyal to the banned hardline Islamic group, Tehreek Nifaz-e-Shariat Mohammadi (TNSM).

It is the latest attempt by Pakistan's new government -- headed by the party of the assassinated prime minister Benazir Bhutto -- to achieve peace through negotiations in the lawless tribal areas where Taliban and al Qaeda leaders are believed to have free rein.

Ahead of the peace pact, Pakistan's government released TNSM's former leader Sufi Mohammed, who had been jailed in 2002 after recruiting thousands of fighters to battle U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

He was freed after agreeing to cooperate with the government. Under the terms of his release, TNSM was also expected to lay down its arms and forgo violence.

But his son-in-law Fazlullah, who took over TNSM during his jail stint, vowed to continue his fight to impose fundamentalist Islamic law in the region.

(CNN) -- An American graduate student who went to Iraq to find ways to help ordinary citizens persevere in a transitioning government was one of two American civilians killed in a Sadr City bombing.

Nicole Suveges, a married political scientist from Illinois, was part of a program that embeds academics into military units to help personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan navigate the local environment, according to her employer, BAE Systems.

Suveges, who started her tour with Human Terrain System in April, had been assigned to support the 3rd Brigade Combat Team for the 4th Infantry Division in "political, cultural, and tribal engagements," a statement from the program said.

She was one of four Americans to die in the Sadr City bombing Tuesday. Two U.S. soldiers and a State Department employee, Steven Farley, who worked with the provincial reconstruction team, also were killed in the blast.

"Nicole was a leading academic who studied for years on how to improve conditions for others," Doug Belair, president of BAE's Technology Solutions & Services, said in a written statement. "She came to us to give freely of herself in an effort to make a better world." cont...

Iraq judge gunned down

Story Highlights
* Judge Kamal al-Showaili was driving home from work in the Jamila neighborhood
* No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, and motive is unknown
* Assassinations of professionals have been common in Iraq during the war

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Gunmen in Baghdad killed a senior city appeals judge on Thursday, an Interior Ministry official said.

The drive-by shooting occurred in eastern Baghdad. No one has claimed responsibility and investigators are looking into a motive for the attack.

The judge, Kamal al-Showaili, was driving home from work in the Jamila neighborhood at the time. At least two of his bodyguards were also wounded.

Al-Showaili headed the appeals court in Rasafa, in eastern Baghdad. The other city appeals court is in Karkh, in western Baghdad.

The assassinations of professionals have been common in Iraq during the war, with lawyers, judges, and professors the victims of violence.

U.S. Embassy staff, soldiers killed in Baghdad blast

Story Highlights
* NEW: Another victim identified as Italian-Iraqi working for U.S. Defense Department
* NEW: Child and policeman killed, dozens wounded in Mosul suicide car bomb
* Four Americans and six Iraqis among 11 dead in blast in Baghdad's Sadr City
* U.S. military will transfer security responsibilities in Anbar province to Iraqi military

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Four Americans -- two soldiers and two civilians from the Defense and State departments -- were killed Tuesday in a blast that rocked a municipal building in Baghdad's Sadr City, the U.S. Embassy said.

The attack also killed six Iraqis and wounded 10 others, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official said.

A second employee from the U.S. Defense Department also died, but that person wasn't an American. The employee was a dual Italian-Iraqi national, the Italian Foreign Ministry said.

The U.S. military said the blast struck a meeting of a district advisory council, a neighborhood group that looks at local needs and passes on its assessments to the provincial government.

The deputy head of the council was seriously injured, the Interior Ministry official said.

The U.S. military blamed Iranian-backed militants it calls Special Groups for the blast and detained three people in connection with the attack, including a suspect "fleeing the scene [who] tested positive for explosive residue."

"We believe the target of the attack was a high-ranking [district advisory council] member as well as the U.S. soldiers," said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, a U.S. military spokesman.

"We believe the Special Groups criminals were upset that the DAC member was working with coalition forces to improve the quality of life for the southern Sadr City residents."

A statement from Ryan Crocker, U.S. ambassador to Iraq, identified the slain State Department employee as Steve Farley.

"Mr. Farley was a member of our embedded Provincial Reconstruction Team for the Sadr City and Adhamiya districts of Baghdad City," the statement said.

"We extend our deepest condolences to their families and friends, and our profound appreciation for the ultimate sacrifice that they made in service to their country and for the people of Iraq. This is a tragic loss and one we all mourn."

The U.S. Embassy statement didn't identify the other victims.

The blast dramatizes the perils the war still poses for Americans despite a Pentagon report Monday that touted a sharp decrease in violence in Iraq in recent months.

The explosion also marked the third strike in two days involving local politicians and political institutions in Baghdad.

A city councilman on Monday fired on U.S. forces at a municipal building southeast of the capital in the Salman Pak area and killed two soldiers.

Separately, the head of Abu Dsheer City Council in Baghdad's southern Dora area was gunned down at his home later Monday.

Last week, a bomb ripped through Baghdad's Hurriya district near a neighborhood advisory council meeting where U.S. troops were stationed, killing 63 people and wounding 71 others.

The U.S. military also blamed that attack on a Special Groups cell, but Stover couldn't say whether it was connected to Tuesday's blast. cont...

For Iraqi Christians, money bought survival

In many cases, Christian families drained their life savings and went into debt to make the payments. Insurgents also raised money by kidnapping priests. The ransoms, often paid by the congregations, typically ran as high as $150,000, several priests and lay Christians said.

Shalom All,

I sometimes wonder why these people just do not move out. What holds them back if the situation is so hopeless? Why stay next to a volcano that is about to erupt when there are safer places to be? If they can afford to pay such ransoms, sell out and then move. I'm planning to do exactly that before it even comes close to that volatile situation even though this is a very nice country to live in now.

Malaysian opposition leader denies sodomy claim

Story Highlights
* People's Justice Party leader Anwar Ibrahim accused of sodomizing a male aide
* Former deputy prime minister was imprisoned on similar charges a decade ago
* Anwar says charges were fabricated to prevent him from exposing corrupt officials
* Allegations come after Anwar's party made tremendous gains in recent elections

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has denied accusations he sodomized a male aide in a politically explosive scandal, which he blamed on a government conspiracy to thwart his rising clout.

The accusations revived memories of a similar sex scandal a decade ago that led to his imprisonment and ouster as deputy prime minister.

Hours after the aide filed the complaint, Anwar, 60, took refuge at the Turkish Embassy, claiming his life was in danger. Anwar, 60, dismissed the accusation as "a complete fabrication."

The dramatic developments that began to unfold a little before midnight Saturday will further roil Malaysian politics, which have been in turmoil since March 8 elections handed the governing National Front coalition its worst-ever result.

A three-party opposition coalition led by Anwar made spectacular gains, winning an unprecedented 82 seats in the 222-member Parliament and the legislatures of five states. Anwar has threatened to engineer defections from the National Front -- which has ruled continuously since 1957 -- to bring down the government by September.

In a statement posted on his blog, Anwar said the political developments put his life in danger. "Certain agents" in the National Front "have initiated plots" to harm him, he said.

"I have been told that my assassination has not been ruled out as means to subvert the people's will and bring an end to the transformational changes taking place in Malaysia," Anwar said.

He added that he remained committed to work toward a "free and just Malaysia."

Several embassies offered to shelter him but Anwar chose the Turkish mission because of his close ties with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said Badrul Hisham Shaharin, a senior member of Anwar's People's Justice Party.

It was not clear how long he would stay there, even though police say they do not intend to arrest him before investigations are complete.

More than 50 supporters gathered outside the embassy anticipating a visit by Anwar's family. Police blocked roads in the area in an apparent security precaution.

Anwar's wife, Azizah Ismail, described the sodomy accusation as an attempt at "political murder."

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi insisted the government was not responsible for the accusation, saying there was no conspiracy "to cause (Anwar) trouble or harass him or raise such issues to undermine him."

Asked about Anwar's denial, Abdullah said it "was common for an accused person" to claim he was innocent.

Anwar, a charismatic politician, was once part of the ruling establishment, rising to the post of deputy prime minister and finance minister in then-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's government in the 1990s.

But it all unraveled in 1998 when he was accused of sodomizing his driver and abusing his power to cover up the deed. Mahathir fired him from the government and had him jailed. Anwar was subsequently convicted on both charges but Malaysia's highest court overturned the sodomy conviction and freed him in 2004.

Anwar insists he was framed to prevent him from challenging Mahathir for power. After a decade in political oblivion, Anwar revived his career with this year's electoral success.

In his blog statement, Anwar said he recently obtained evidence that the national police chief, Musa Hassan, and the attorney general, Abdul Gani Patail, fabricated evidence against him in 1998.

"These actions are being repeated today to undermine the forces of reform and renewal which were unleashed in the March 2008 elections," he said. In an earlier statement, he said the new accusation was engineered by "interested parties" to prevent him from exposing Musa and Abdul Gani.

Bakri Zinin, the federal police chief for criminal investigations, said the aide filed a complaint Saturday claiming Anwar had sodomized him in a condominium in an upscale Kuala Lumpur suburb.

"We want to establish the allegation first to see whether there is truth or not," Bakri told a news conference. "We will conduct a thorough investigation and be fair to both sides."

Sodomy, even if consensual, is punishable by 20 years' imprisonment in Muslim-majority Malaysia.

Anwar did not run in the March elections because his abuse of power conviction barred him from holding political office for five years. The ban ended in April, and Anwar has indicated he wants to re-enter Parliament through a by-election, which would make him eligible to become prime minister.

Muslims threaten Malaysia Chelsea boycott

Story Highlights
* Muslim leaders want Malaysians to boycott planned summer visit by Chelsea
* Chelsea manager Avram Grant and defender Tal Ben Haim are both Israelis
* Israelis need permission to come to Malaysia as there are no diplomatic ties

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Muslim leaders have urged Malaysians to boycott a planned visit from English Premier League club Chelsea after their government decided to allow the London side's Israeli manager Avram Grant and defender Tal Ben Haim to enter the country.

Spokesman Mohamad Azmi Abdul Hamid said the coalition of 21 Muslim groups would hold a mass protest at the tour match if the government did not bar the pair.

"Malaysians should boycott the match," said Mohamad Azmi. "We should unite with the Palestinian people and fight for an independent homeland for them."

Malaysia does not have diplomatic ties with Israel and its citizens must obtain special permission to travel here.

"The reason for the travel ban to Malaysia is to isolate Israel which is a rogue state. If the Israeli footballers are allowed in, the government will be considered as being insensitive to the Palestinian people," Mohamad Azmi said.

He warned that if Grant and Ben Haim were allowed into Malaysia, the coalition would picket Chelsea's match against a Malaysian team on July 29. "Definitely, we will mobilize the public and hold a protest outside the stadium," he said.

The caption on the photo below reads: "The presence of Grant and Ben Haim could lead to Muslims boycotting Chelsea's game in Malaysia."

EGYPT: A frail pope and sectarian tensions

It’s been a time of prayer and angst for Egypt’s Coptic Christians.

The leader of the nation’s Coptic Church, Pope Shenouda III, was reportedly flown this week to a U.S. hospital after breaking his leg in a fall at his residence. The 85-year-old patriarch has been in frail health for years, and his latest travail comes during rising tension in this predominantly Muslim nation over the murders and kidnappings of Copts.

On Monday, the pope “slipped on a carpet in his home and fell, breaking his thigh bone," Tharwat Bassily, a member of the church’s lay council, told Agenece France-Presse. He added that Shenouda was unable to reach the telephone and remained alone on the floor from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak arranged for the pope to be transported in his state jet to a hospital in Cleveland.

The Coptic church and the Mubarak government have been attempting to defuse a resurgence of sectarian animosity. In May, four Copts were shot dead in a Cairo jewelry shop by a man firing an automatic weapon who fled without stealing anything. Days later, armed Muslims attacked a monastery in the southern town of Malawi; one Muslim was killed and several Coptic priests were briefly taken hostage.

Egypt has prided itself on peaceful coexistence among its religious groups, but Copts, who make up about 10% of the country’s population of 78 million, have often complained of discrimination. Coptic protesters in Malawi recently chanted: “With our blood and soul, we will defend the cross.... Coptic hearts are on fire.”

EGYPT: Coptic diaspora spreads the word

In the midst of continuing sectarian tensions between Muslims and Coptic Christians in Egypt, the Coptic diaspora has recently called for demonstrations in the U.S. and European cities.

Hundreds of Coptic migrants took to the streets in the Netherlands, France and the U.S., raising banners reading "Save Christians in Egypt," "Stop Islamic Terrorism" and "Help! Christians of Egypt are under attack."

The protests follow an eruption of violence between Muslims and Copts in several parts of Egypt. Last month a land dispute involving a Coptic monastery left one Muslim man killed in the southern province of Menya. Four Copts, including two monks, were injured. The clash arose after the monastery began building a wall around neighboring farming land, saying it belonged to the church. Days earlier in Cairo, four Copts were shot dead in a jewelry shop by two gunmen who fled without stealing anything.

Egypt is predominantly Sunni Muslim; the Coptic minority is believed to constitute almost 10% of a population of 78 million. An estimated 2 million Copts live in the diaspora.

Since Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak came to power in 1981, the Coptic Church has sought to project an image of religious co-existence and has not turned to inflammatory discourse on sectarian violence. Yet the response to the recent bloodshed suggests that the church is about to change its style. This month the Coptic Holy Senate issued a relatively strongly worded statement calling on Mubarak to put an end to armed attacks against Copts and ensure their safety.

The church, which refrains from publicly criticizing the regime, has often distanced itself from the demands made by its followers overseas. This week violence broke out between Copts and Muslims over a rumor of the kidnapping of a Muslim woman and her son in Fayoum province, about 80 miles south of Cairo. One Muslim reportedly died of a heart attack and four Copts were injured in the clashes.

The tension comes at a crucial moment for the Coptic Orthodox Church as the frail Pope Shenouda III is away for medical treatment in the U.S.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- A Singaporean who met several times with Osama bin Laden was among nine terror suspects arrested in western Indonesia, a local television station reported.

A cache of powerful bombs packed with bullets was also seized in the raid Wednesday.

The men initially planned to attack Western tourists on Sumatra Island, but changed their minds after realizing too many Indonesian lives could be lost, TVOne quoted anti-terror police as saying. They reportedly were considering a bombing in the capital, Jakarta, instead.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has been hit in recent years by a string of suicide bombings that have killed more than 240 people. The regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah has been blamed in those attacks.

Indonesian court sentences key militant

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- An Indonesian court has sentenced the alleged military commander of an al Qaeda-linked terror network to 15 years in prison.

Abu Dujana is the alleged leader of the military wing of Jemaah Islamiyah, a group that is thought to be linked to al Qaeda. It aims to create a Muslim "superstate" across much of Southeast Asia.

Although this article was first published in April, I think it further illustrates the media's confusion (misleading?) presentation of 'al Qaeda.'

Quoting from the 'Al-Qaeda' section of Prophet of Doom:

Quote:
While al-Qaeda is often referred to as Wahhabist, that designation just means that they adhere to the pure, uncorrupted form of Islam lived and taught by Allah's lone messenger and Islam's solitary prophet Muhammad. And that's not good since according to the oldest Islamic sources Allah's prophet was a sexual pervert, a rapist and pedophile, a womanizer and adulterer who was incestuous. Muhammad was actively engaged in armed robbery, mass murder, kidnapping, extortion, and the slave trade. But more than anything, Muhammad was a terrorist. Allah's messenger led 75 terrorist raids during the first ten years of the Islamic Era.

Gunmen kill U.N. official, wound another in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia (CNN) -- A senior U.N. official in Somalia was gunned down Sunday night as he exited a mosque after evening prayers, according to a journalist on the scene.

Osman Ali Ahmed, head of the U.N. development program in the war-torn capital of Mogadishu, was shot at about 7:50 p.m. and died from his wounds at an African Union-run hospital near Mogadishu airport, said the Shabelle Media Network journalist, whose name was withheld for security reasons.

Ahmed apparently was the target of the attack, an official with the U.N. program said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the situation.

The journalist said he spoke with Ahmed's mother-in-law, who lived with him in a house five blocks from the mosque. She confirmed that Ahmed had been ambushed by gunmen outside the mosque and shot twice in the head.
