A Muslim woman walks into a Unitarian church ..
By Leanne Larmondin

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario—Some church-going families in the Western world would recoil at the thought of a Muslim being responsible for their children’s religious education.

But Farzana Hassan, activist, writer and advocate for Islamic reform, isn’t your average Muslim, and the Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga isn’t your average suburban church.

Hassan, former president of the Muslim Canadian Congress, was recently hired as the director of spiritual exploration at the Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga, a suburb 15 miles west of Toronto. The part-time position in the self-described “liberal spiritual community” sees her working with up to three dozen children, ranging from 3 to 18 years old, every Sunday. Read on.

Sheikh attacks Israel, pope walks out

May. 11, 2009
JPost.com Staff , THE JERUSALEM POST
Chief Islamic Judge of the Palestinian Authority, Sheikh Tayseer Rajab Tamimi, launched a poisonous verbal attack at Israel at a Monday night gathering attended by Pope Benedict XVI.

In a meeting with organizations involved in inter-religious dialogue at the Notre Dame Jerusalem Center, Tamimi called upon Muslims and Christians to unite against what he said were the murderous Israelis.

Taking the podium after the pope without being on the original list of speakers scheduled for the evening, Tamimi, speaking at length in Arabic, accused Israel of murdering women and children in Gaza and making Palestinians refugees, and declared Jerusalem the eternal Palestinian capital.

Following the diatribe and before the meeting was officially over, the pope exited the premises. Army Radio reported that the pope shook Tamimi's hand before walking out.

Minutes after the embarrassing occurrence, Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See press office, released a response to the incident.

"The intervention of Sheikh Tayseer Tamimi was not previewed by the organizers of the interreligious meeting that took place at Notre Dame Centre in Jerusalem," the message read. "In a meeting dedicated to dialogue, this intervention was a direct negation of what [it] should be," it continued.

"We hope that such an incident will not damage the mission of the Holy Father aiming at promoting peace and interreligious dialogue, as he has clearly affirmed in many occasions in this pilgrimage," Father Lombardi added.

"We hope also that interreligious dialogue in the holy land will not be damaged by this incident," the message concluded.

Nine years ago, Tamimi caused a similar scandal when at an interfaith meeting attended by then-Pope John Paul II at the Notre Dame Jerusalem Center, the Palestinian religious leader condemned Israel for a long list of offenses.

Never referring to Israel by name, Tamimi had called on 'the occupier' to stop 'strangling Jerusalem and oppressing its residents.'

Singling out land confiscations, house demolitions, settlements and the Baruch Goldstein shooting in 1994, Tamimi had said Israel has a long record of 'genocide' and 'shooting and wounding Palestinian children.'

Gil Hoffman contributed to this report.

Pope visits Jerusalem holy sites
Tuesday, 12 May 2009

The Pope prayed at the Western Wall in Jerusalem in the full glare of the media

Pope Benedict XVI is visiting sites in Jerusalem holy to Muslims, Jews and Christians on the second day of his visit to the Holy Land.

He visited the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, becoming the first pontiff to see the site, and then the Western Wall, one of Judaism's holiest places.

Later, he will pray where Christ is said to have eaten his last meal before crucifixion. Read on

What do you think he prayed at the Western Wall?

EDIT:

Matthew wrote:

From the article:

Quote:
The Pope placed a written prayer into a gap in the wall, before standing in silence with his head bowed.

His prayer asked the "God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob" to send "peace upon this Holy Land, upon the Middle East, upon the entire human family".

Hookers for Jesus...

Not what I was expecting (pleasantly surprised).
“Because he clings to Me, is joined to Me, loves and delights in Me, desires Me, therefore I will deliver him, carry him safely away, cause him to escape from harm making him inaccessible and strong, and delivering him safely to heaven, because he has known, observed, cared for, recognized, instructed and advised others to use, designated, acknowledged, discerned, answered in, My name, authority, character, report, mark, and nature." True Baalers

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa says PETA and other animal rights activists are "worshipping animals."

In response to a question about those pesky activists who argue that sick cows should not be prodded with electric rods and made to live in cages, Grassley says: "they're not interested in how good farmers treat their animals. You've got to realize that this is a religion with them. They're worshipping animals. And from that standpoint, their goal isn't just to have more equitable treatment of animals. They want -- they don't want animals to be used for meat or milk or things of that nature."

Now, Grassley is an evangelical Christian, so he presumably knows something about worship, what with the praise songs and the kneeling and the imprecations. So, how does he go from advocating for animal rights to worshipping them? Is he thinking of Hindus? Or is he taking a dog-eared page from anti-global warming playbook, which labeles Sierra Clubbers and other earthniks "earth worshippers"?

Is this Grassley's way of saying, "These animal rights people, they aren't good Christians like you and me, they're Baalists"?

Ultra-Orthodox Jews visit Hamas

Four members of a group of ultra-Orthodox Jews opposed to the existence of Israel have visited Hamas in Gaza.

The men, clad in the traditional ultra-Orthodox garb of black hats and coats and with long side-curls in their hair, met Hamas leader Ismail Haniya.

The Neturei Karta believe that a Jewish state can only be established by the Messiah and thus denounce Israel as heretic and embrace its enemies.

Mr Haniya welcomed them, saying Hamas rejects Zionist ideology, not Jews.

"We feel your suffering, we cry your cry," the Associated Press quoted Rabbi Yisroel Weiss as saying.

"It is your land, it is occupied, illegitimately and unjustly by people who stole it, kidnapped the name of Judaism and our identity." Read on

Many Ultra-Orthodox Jews are anti-Zionists, yet are they moving back to The Promised Land, thereby taking self-loathing to new heights.

Sad.

However, while walking towards the Old City one morning (across the street from the US Consulate) an Orthodox Jew (beard, hat, everything), silently, came up an hugged my (obviously American) buddy and I, then walked off. That event touched my spirit.

Megabucks for megachurch

An Atlanta-area megachurch that covered dozens of acres and became embroiled in scandal has been sold for millions of dollars, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The Cathedral at Chapel Hill, where the late Bishop Earl Paulk Jr. once served as pastor, was sold to Greater Traveler's Rest Baptist Church for $17.6 million.

"This was one of the largest religious facilities available in the United States," said Matt Messier, broker and principal for CNL Specialty Real Estate. "We are happy to have brokered a successful outcome for a property of this size, especially in today's challenging economic climate."

The 51-acre church campus includes a 6,000-seat sanctuary, theater, classrooms, offices and fellowship hall. It went on the market for $24.5 million in November.

"At its height in the 1990s, the church drew 10,000 attendees, but in recent years membership had declined to roughly 1,000 after a series of sexual misconduct allegations were made against Paulk," reported Charisma magazine on its Web site.

Film asks how the Gospel became so divisive

Yahushua said that there would be division.

Luk 12:51 “Do you think that I came to give peace on earth? I say to you, no, but rather division.

Lutherans lift ban on gay clergy
By Adelle M. Banks

(UNDATED) After a long and contentious debate, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America voted Friday (Aug. 21) to drop a ban on partnered gay clergy and committed to let people in same-sex relationships serve as leaders of the church.

The ground-breaking decision is a dramatic change for the nation’s largest Lutheran denomination, which previously permitted openly gay and lesbian clergy so long as they remained celibate. full story

Muslim children deposit money in zakat, or charity, boxes during Ramadan. Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, and some Muslims say government scrutiny after 9/11 has made it harder to make charitable contributions.

In response to the Lutherans lift ban on gay clergy article.

Coincidentally or not a F0 tornado touched down exactly where the Lutherans were meeting that day at around 2PM.

Tornado, storms cause heavy damage in Midwest According to the Associated Press: - Wednesday, August 19, 2009:
An excerpt: The National Weather Service received reports of a possible tornado near downtown Minneapolis, where winds tore off part of a 90-year-old metal church steeple. Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois were also hit, though the only confirmed tornado as of Wednesday night was in Hastings, about 30 miles southeast of Minneapolis, where a 100-yard-long swath of trees was flattened.
Jack Freitag said he was standing in the lobby of the Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis when he saw "a wall cloud from the south coming across the parking lot." Then a "very loud roar" came through as he saw signs being blown around in the wind.
The wind tore off part of the church's 90-year-old metal steeple around 2 p.m. while about 120 people were inside, said church spokesman Joe Bjordal. "I was worried about the people then," said Freitag, who told everyone to seek shelter in the church's basement. No one was injured.
Outside the church, strong winds ripped apart large outdoor tents and scattered chairs and folding tables across the parking lot that were set up for the national Evangelical Lutheran Church in America convention. The church was scheduled to serve breakfast to guests attending the event at the Minneapolis Convention Center next door. ---

An F0 rating for the Minneapolis tornado
The damage assessment team from the National Weather Service office that covers the Twin Cities rated the tornado that touched down in Minneapolis as an EF0, with maximum winds of between 75 and 85 miles an hour.
The tornado touched down at about 1:50 p.m. in south Minneapolis, then moved virtually straight north toward downtown before lifting near the Convention Center at about 2 p.m. The track was about 4.5 miles long, with a maximum width of about 500 yards – though the most intense damage occurred along a path perhaps 250 yards wide.
Here’s a map of the track, which I find remarkable for how straight it was for most of its length.

The tornado looks like a surgical strike to me.

Coincidence or not? Maybe Yahweh was casting his vote. If he was then the Lutherans didn’t count his vote that day. Or maybe the tornado was just a coincidence.
