Domoic Acid Advisory Issued for Consumers of Lobsters and Rock Crabs
Quote:

The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is warning all consumers of California spiny lobster to eat only the tail meat until further notice. Elevated levels of domoic acid toxin have been found in the viscera of lobster sampled from waters adjacent to the northern Channel Islands. Elevated levels of the toxin have also been detected in recent samples of rock crab, and so this warning also extends to this species. The meat of the lobster and crab is not affected by the toxin, but all internal organs, including the roe, should be discarded.

Symptoms of domoic acid poisoning can occur within 30 minutes to 24 hours after eating toxic seafood. In mild cases, symptoms may include nausea or diarrhea, cramps, headache and dizziness. These symptoms typically disappear within several days, but in severe cases, the victim may experience life-threatening symptoms, or even death.

“DFG biologists are working with the Department of Public Health to increase the level of sampling for domoic acid along the coast,” said DFG Senior Invertebrate Specialist Kristine Barsky. “To date, there have been no known cases of poisoning. With this warning we want to ensure consumer safety, but not discourage people from enjoying these tasty crustaceans.”

Domoic acid is a naturally occurring toxin sometimes found in the microscopic marine algae that small fish, clams, and mussels eat. Crabs and lobsters feed on these animals and concentrate the toxin in their organs. The algal blooms can come and go quickly, so it’s difficult to determine exactly when and where they are present. Thus, this warning applies to all lobster and rock crab harvested in southern California.

As soon as domoic acid toxin is no longer detected in samples, DFG will issue another news release. In the meantime, check DFG’s website at www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/healthadvisory.asp for updates and more information on this situation.

No Oink About It, Feral Pig Problem Spreading

Read more: here

War is being waged right now across the country -- against huge, ever-growing packs of feral pigs that are running rampant, destroying crops, killing wildlife and spreading disease everywhere they go, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is taking the problem very seriously. "Because of the impact it has on everything from agriculture to natural resources and humans’ health and safety, its an extremely important problem,” Bannerman said.

Apparently the problem is so widespread that they are able to make a television documentary series about it. Every episode some new location is profiled, showing the steps being taken to deal with the issue. The film footage is fascinating and appalling at the same time. Disturbing is the fact that the varmint control people donate the killed pigs to feed the homeless. YUCK!

I also recall reading about Hogzilla a couple of years ago, a monster wild hog killed in Georgia, USA back in 2004. The Wikipedia article is here.

Hmmm. Why doesn't that work? What am I doing wrong?

The animal's remains were exhumed in early 2005 and studied by Dr. Oz Katz and his father, Prof. Roi Lerner for a documentary and a book they wrote together. In March 2005, these scientists confirmed that Hogzilla actually weighed 800 pounds (360 kg) and was between 6.9 feet (2.1 m) and 8.6 feet (2.6 m) long, diminishing the previous claim. The beast's hams were as big as car tires. DNA testing was performed, revealing that Hogzilla was a hybrid of wild boar and domestic pig (Hampshire breed). However, compared to most wild boars and domestics, Hogzilla is still quite a large and extraordinary specimen.

Hogzilla's tusks measured nearly 28 inches (71 cm) and 19 inches (48 cm)

Then there was Hogzilla 2

Monster Pig (or Pigzilla) is the name of a large domestic farm-raised pig that was shot during a hunt on May 3, 2007 by an eleven-year-old boy named Jamison Stone. The location of the shooting was claimed to be a 150-acre (60 ha) low fence enclosure within the larger 2,500-acre (1,010 ha) commercial hunting preserve outside Anniston, Alabama, USA. According to the hunters (there were no independent witnesses), the pig weighed 1,051 pounds (477 kg).

The hunters also claimed that the pig was 9 feet 4 inches (2.84 m) in length from the tip of its snout to the base of its tail.

Stone said he was using a Smith & Wesson Model 500 with a mounted holographic scope and ported barrel and fired eight 350-grain Hornady cartridges into the pig. Stone chased the hog for three hours through hilly woods, firing repeatedly and missing, but finally wounded the animal enough times that it collapsed from blood loss
