This story appeared today on CNN. I never realized that many see the head scarf was the symbol of "political Islam." Quote:ANKARA, Turkey (AP) -- Turkey's Constitutional Court is expected to rule Thursday on an opposition motion to keep Muslim head scarves off university campuses -- a ruling that could hold ominous portents for the Islamic-oriented government.

Shalom, Dressing, or lack thereof, has always been used for political symbols. Forcing people to dress according to certain rules and regulations has been the norm for religio-political control. The Taliban did it against the Muslims in Afghanistan, Arabs do it all over the Middle-East and dar-Al-Islam, orthodox Jews identify themselves with black robes and hats, etc. In almost all cases people willingly submit to dress codes to get the corresponding benefits. Dress helps identify affiliations and defines cultures. Politics necessitates the use of dress codes for the same purpose. Remember when the Jews were forced to wear the Star of David on a yellow armband? In the past it seems that Jews were forced to wear the kippa or yarmulke so that they can be easily identified from the non-Jews. Read http://www.fossilizedcustoms.com/kipa.html for more information. It is the forcing of people to obey certain dress codes that is unacceptable. People need to be able to choose.
